College Football: Each Power Five conference’s top 3 running backs for 2020
Zach Charbonnet had an outstanding freshman season for the Michigan Wolverines. He became the first running back to start as a true freshman for Michigan since 2008 (Sam McGuffie) and ran for 726 yards and 11 touchdowns. He became the first running back to start as a true freshman.
He was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention and took home the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award after rushing for 104 yards and three touchdowns against Army in just his second career college game.
With all he accomplished as a true freshman, the ceiling is extremely high for the Michigan back, whose already established himself among the best in the Big Ten.
On the other side of the Great Lake State, there’s another running back who is coming off a tremendous freshman season.
Michigan State‘s Elijah Collins ran for 988 yards and five touchdowns as a redshirt freshman for the Spartans last season while adding 99 receiving yards.
He earned third-team All-Big Ten honors and All-Big Ten honorable mention. In the Spartans’ Pinstripe Bowl victory over Wake Forest, Collins ran for 96 yards to help MSU finish the season with a winning record of 7-6.
With three years of college ball ahead, Collins is going to keep improving despite his numbers already suggesting he’s among the elite running backs in the Big Ten.
In his first season as Penn State‘s starting running back, Journey Brown showed why he’s the top back in the conference returning to school in 2020.
He ran for 890 yards while averaging 6.9 yards per carry and scoring 12 touchdowns. In Penn State’s Cotton Bowl victory over Memphis, he ran for a program bowl record with 202 yards passing Saquon Barkley‘s 194 yards in the 2017 Rose Bowl.
Brown showed he brings his best on the big stage, which will be key in Penn State’s pursuit of a Big Ten title next season.
