Week 10: Virginia Tech football at Pitt (Nov. 6)

The Pitt Panthers have been a thorn in Virginia Tech’s side for years, particularly during the two schools’ halcyon days in the Big East.

Pat Narduzzi’s crew put together an 8-5 mark capped with a 34-30 win over Central Michigan in the 2019 Quick Lane Bowl. Woes on the offensive line and a consequently absent run game will have to be corrected if the 2020 Panthers have any ambition.

The defense looks strong with a starting secondary already in place. Quarterback Kenny Pickett threw for over 3,000 yards last year, so he can do some damage if protected.

Virginia Tech owned Pitt in Blacksburg last year, shutting out the Panthers 28-0. Most of the key culprits from the Hokie defense that day will be back for another one. Playing an old rival on their home field under the Friday night lights is something that players get up for.

All things considered, if Pitt’s defense is strong and the Panthers can complement Pickett’s passing with some running, the complexion of this game could be very different. Virginia Tech’s ability to run gives them a very slight edge.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 20, Pittsburgh 17 (6-3, 3-2)
