College Football Rewind: 5 most important games from 2007 season
1. Pittsburgh 13, (2) West Virginia 9
In what was the most impactful game of the 2007 season, Pittsburgh pulled a major shocker to keep West Virginia out of the national championship game and probably winning the whole thing, too.
On the same night that Missouri lost to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game, West Virginia couldn’t escape its hated rivals in the the “Backyard Brawl” and it prevented the Mountaineers from playing for the national championship and having their defining moment as a program.
West Virginia quarterback Pat White was banged up during the game and the high-octane spread offense attack was slowed to just nine points and Pitt running back Lesean McCoy led the Panthers to victory.
I have made a point over the years that when Pat White was healthy, West Virginia was the best team in the country in 2007.
West Virginia has had some good teams over the years, but they have not had a team reach this level and be a serious national championship threat and that is why this was the most impactful game of the 2007 season.
