Clemson football’s generational talent

Every year, there is one prospect that geared to be one of the top picks in the NFL draft since their freshman year. Junior quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been a player to watch out for the 2021 NFL Draft ever since he arrived on campus.

Lawrence was the top-rated recruit in the recruiting class of 2018 and the sixth overall recruit all-time by 247Sports. He is the second-rated quarterback recruited behind former Texas Longhorns quarterback Vince Young.

Since taking almost midway through the 2018 season in his freshman season, Lawrence has been one of the most productive quarterbacks on the field.

In 15 games played in 2018, Lawrence completed 259 passes (out of 397 attempts) for 3,280 yards, 30 touchdowns and four interceptions. He led the Tigers to their third national title in program history in a dominating 44-16 win against Alabama in the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship.

In his sophomore season, Lawrence declined slightly in consistency and efficiency. He did find his consistency as the season went on where it is difficult for quarterbacks to find it. This past season, Lawrence completed 268 passes (out of 407 attempts) for 3,665 yards, 36 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 563 yards and nine touchdowns on 103 carries.

Lawrence led the Tigers to another national title game where they lost 42-25 to the LSU Tigers. This was the first loss as a starting quarterback for Clemson with a 25-1 record.

The talented junior is the most established pro-style passer since Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. He measures in at 6-6 and 220 pounds to go along with his pocket presence, his arm strength, accuracy and ability to account for yards on the ground.

Lawrence is the most established and pro-ready quarterback for the 2021 NFL Draft prospects. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is gaining traction as his ability to account for plenty of total yardage per game. Lawrence ranks No. 1 overall by Athlon Sports and USA Today of the prospects for the 2021 NFL Draft.

If he plays at the same efficient level he has been playing throughout his entire career, he will be no doubt the top overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to a program needing a franchise rebuilder.
