2. Michael Dwumfour, Michigan DL transfer

Michigan transfer Michael Dwumfour is one of the few transfers who will play immediately. Greg Schiano understands that to build this program, he needs to do so from the inside out. To build equity for the future, they need to be competitive this season.

Dwumfour gives the Scarlett Knights depth along their defensive line year one of Schiano’s return. Not only does the New Jersey-native give the defense some depth, his ability to play both end and tackle gives the defensive line versatility as well.

Both Schiano and defensive coordinator Robb Smith have been intentional in building the defensive line. They’ve recruited six defensive linemen and signed four transfers. They know to compete in their division, they have to be competitive upfront.

The climb to respectability is a tougher climb for Schiano and Rutgers now then it was in 2001. So much is different. As good as the top of the Big East was, there is no comparison to the Big Ten East. That is why the offensive and defensive lines are so important.

Smith and Schiano are also rebuilding a defense that surrendered well over 30 points per game last season. If that defense wants to keep their team in games, it all starts up front.
