College Football Rewind: 5 most important games from 2009 season
1. (2) Alabama 32, (1) Florida 13
For the second straight season, Alabama and Florida met as the top two ranked teams in the country heading into the SEC Championship Game and the stakes were enormous. The winner would go to the BCS national title game and the loser would be stuck in another disappointing BCS bowl appearance.
Florida was trying to win its third national championship in four years and cement itself as one of the greatest dynasties in recent memory, while possibly making Tim Tebow the greatest college quarterback of all time and making Urban Meyer the undisputed best coach in the game.
Alabama running back Mark Ingram made his mark on the Heisman race with a great performance with 28 carries for 113 yards and Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy turned in a great performance going 12-18 for 239 yards.
Alabama’s offense turned in a great performance and kept the ball away from an explosive Gators offense and the Tide won the game 32-13. This game signaled the end of the Meyer era at Florida, as he would retire at the end of the next season before going to take the job at Ohio State in 2012.
This game would also announce that the Crimson Tide were here to stay and on the verge of something special and that is why I’m ranking this game as the most important from the 2009 season.
