2. Is Adrian Martinez the answer for Nebraska football?

When junior quarterback Adrian Martinez chose Nebraska he had already de-committed from both Cal and Tennessee. He chose the Cornhuskers over Arizona State, Alabama and Georgia. He was the gem in Scott Frost’s recruiting class and rebuilding project.

It’s a bit of hyperbole to say that Martinez has been a disappointment, but he has not broken through to become one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten like so many thought he would become. Last season was worse than his first in Lincoln.

His production took a huge hit as he battled injuries much of last season. Injuries have been one of his issues as he’s struggled to stay on the field for an entire season. When he’s on the field, he’s been productive. Last season, he led the Cornhuskers in passing and was second in rushing.

In addition to staying healthy, Martinez has struggled with consistency when he does play. He had an outstanding game against Ohio State during his freshman year in 2018. That was supposed to be his coming-out party; it was not to be, however.

In his sophomore year, the inconsistency continued. As good a game as he played against Ohio State as a freshman, he was equally as bad as a sophomore throwing for 47 yards. Against Iowa — a game that could have put them in the postseason — he threw for 50 yards.

If Nebraska is going to take that step, it needs consistent, reliable play from Martinez next season. He can’t be up and down or play poorly in big games.
