Penn State Football: Ranking 2020 opponents by toughness
The opening game for the 2020 season for Penn State, they will welcome Kent State, who is coming off of a surprising bowl appearance in 2019 and will be looking to build upon their 7-6 season that concluded with a bowl win over Utah State.
Last year’s 7-6 season was the first winning season since they won 11 games in 2012 and they have been a struggling program overall, but there is a sense that they could have sustained success with a new coaching staff and coming off their first-ever bowl win last year.
Kent State’s Dustin Crum is back for his senior season and might be the best quarterback in the MAC. Kent State will have a challenging non-conference schedule that not only includes Penn State, but Alabama and Kentucky as well. Expect Penn State to roll in this one and win comfortably.
A program that has had sustained success under Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern took a hard fall last season after playing in their first-ever Big Ten title game in 2018. Northwestern had one of the worst offenses in the country and could not get any semblance of good quarterback play, and that was the biggest reason for posting a 3-9 record.
Fitzgerald has been a big success at Northwestern and despite many programs trying to hire him away, he has chosen to stay in Evanston where he has posted multiple 10-win seasons.
Northwestern will be bringing in a new offensive coordinator and Indiana transfer Peyton Ramsey will be taking over at quarterback. Northwestern will hope that these new additions will bring back the winning ways and that last season was a fluke. The new offense will be tested early when they travel to Happy Valley to play Penn State.
