1. Tom Herman, Texas

This is a similar situation to Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. It’s a program that thinks extremely highly of themselves and anything less than the best is seen as somewhat of a failure. And it’s for this reason that Texas having a 10-win season in his best year isn’t good enough.

Now, this is definitely a controversial pick, since Herman hasn’t done a bad job by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, he’s improved the program quite a big compared to where it was during Charlie Strong’s three years at the helm.

But the fact of the matter is this: Texas doesn’t want to be a fringe-top 25 team. They’re paying $6 million per year to be in contention for a national championship. Three bowl wins isn’t good enough if they’re only winning eight games.

So, again, to say that Herman has done a bad job would be blasphemous but there is no doubt in my mind that he hasn’t earned his entire salary quite yet.

We’ll see if he can break through to the next level or if he’ll be stuck next to Jim Harbaugh as a big name in-betweener.
