10 college football coaches who could be out of a job after the 2020 season
Steve Campbell, South Alabama Jaguars
Record: 5-19 in 2 seasons
Going through the transaction after a program’s first head is not easy. For the South Alabama Jaguars, life after former head coach Joey Jones has not been easy. They hired Central Arkansas head coach Steve Campbell for the same position to lead them to potential Sun Belt titles.
The first season under Campbell did not go well for the Jaguars as they went 3-9 with two wins in the Sun Belt. The following season did not see much progress gained as the Jaguars finished 2-10 with only one conference win. Instead of seeing progress going forward for the program, the Jaguars took a significant step back. This is a football program that went to two bowl games in their five seasons as an FBS program.
With a tough schedule ahead of them for the 2020 season, the Jaguars will need to take ahold of all opportunities to win some games. South Alabama will start their season on the road at Southern Miss then they will have five of their next six games at home in their new on-campus stadium in Hancock Whitney Stadium.
Offensively, they will have to be more consistent in driving the ball down the field. Last season, the offense was ranked 121st in the nation in points per game (18.4). Winning more than two or three games is possible for South Alabama as they are projected to finish third out of fifth place in the Sun Belt West.
