Will Muschamp, South Carolina Gamecocks

Record: 26-25 in 4 seasons

The South Carolina Gamecocks have been in a tough SEC East where either Florida or Georgia are winning the title every year. The only time South Carolina has won the SEC East was in 2010 when they lost to the eventual 2011 BCS national champion Auburn in the SEC title game.

Will Muschamp was brought on the head coach to bring intensity and the hunger to win titles. The future was bright for the Gamecocks as they accounted for a 9-4 record in Muschamp’s second season in 2017. Since then, the Gamecocks are 11-14.

Last season, the Gamecocks finished with a 4-8 record due to an inconsistent offense. A shocking 20-17 overtime victory in Athens over the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs might have saved Muschamp’s job. That game was more on the Bulldogs throwing away the victory than the Gamecocks hanging on to win.

In his four seasons as head coach for South Carolina, Muschamp has underperformed against fellow SEC teams with a 15-17 record. The Gamecocks are also on a six-game losing streak to their biggest rivals in the Clemson Tigers. The last time they beat the Tigers was 2013.

This is a program that knows they are not as established as Georgia or Florida, but they believe they have the tools to win. They need the right head coach to lead them to some form of elite caliber SEC program.

If Muschamp cannot get the Gamecocks to another bowl game this 2020 season, they might be provoked to look someplace else.
