Record: 2-22 in 2 seasons

The UTEP Miners have not adjusted well since their head coach Mike Price resigned during the 2012 season. Since the beginning of the 2013 season, the Miners have accumulated a 20-65 record. Sean Kugler (2013-17) had an 18-36 record as head coach of the Miners. The program was looking for a head coach with long-term experience leading a program.

They decided to hire Kansas State offensive coordinator Dana Dimel (2009-17) as their head coach. This would be his third stint as a head coach at Wyoming and Houston. In his two seasons as head coach of the Miners, Dimel accounted for a 2-22 record.

In 2018, the Miners started their season with an embarrassing 30-10 loss at home to Northern Arizona. Their lone win was a 34-26 conference win at the Rice Owls. This is the only conference win in Dimel’s current head coaching with the Miners.

Last season, the Miners’ only win was a 36-34 win over Houston Baptist in the season-opener. They finished the season ranked 119th in points scored per game (19.6) and 119th in points allowed per game (35.9). Dimel is a coach that has plenty of control of the Miners’ offense and the programs expect better results with his experience.

Athlon Sports projects the Miners to win only one game this season with none of them in the C-USA. They return only three offensive starters and four defensive starters from last year’s team. While the Miners are not projected to be a competitor in the C-USA title race, a potential 3-33 is terrible for a program that hasn’t had a winning season since the 2014 season.
