Dino Babers, Syracuse Orange

Record: 23-26 in 4 seasons

After two seasons of 4-8 records at Syracuse, head coach Dino Babers got the Orange to a successful season in 2018 with a 10-3 mark. The Orange finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation and Babers won ACC Coach of the Year. This was the first winning season that Syracuse accounted for since 2013 when it finished 7-6.

A year after the Orange recorded their first 10-win season since the 2001 season, they underperformed and suffered through a 5-7 campaign in 2019. This was due to the inefficient offensive line and defense despite a talented defensive line. The Orange also lost by wide margins against other ACC teams. Four of the losses came with an 18-point margin against conference opponents.

Babers is going to have a hard time as head coach of the Orange if he cannot recruit efficiently as well as keep his team from collapsing leads. He has coached two successful stints at Eastern Illinois (19-7 in 2012-13) and Bowling Green (18-9 in 2014-15). This is the longest job of his head coaching as he will enter his fifth season.

This season, the Orange are projected to finish 6-6 with a 2-6 record in ACC play. This will be a step in the right direction for the Orange but it’s still a downplay from their 2018 season. Babers will likely continue his role as head coach if he gets Syracuse to bowl eligibility and the program sees a boost in recruiting progress.
