Boise State vs. Appalachian State

A team that could very well be the next Group of Five powerhouse against the team that put eyeballs on the non-powers to begin with. This one is full of storylines.

Even though Appalachian State is in arguably the weakest conference in the FBS, don’t count out the Mountaineers.

All the Mountaineers have to do to solidify their hopes at a New Year’s Six bowl is get over the Georgia Southern hump. The Eagles have handed App State two of their last three losses. The other loss? By seven points to 10th-ranked Penn State.

Of course, everyone remembers when Appalachian State became famous. That game at the Big House. That blocked field goal. That radio call.

Since then, Appalachian State has only gone up. The Mountaineers have an FCS National Championship and moved up to FBS where they are undefeated in bowl games and have not had a single losing record since joining.

Boise, on the other hand, gained their notoriety nine months earlier when they handed Adrian Petersen and Oklahoma a stunning defeat. Much like the Mountaineers’ breakout performance, it’s been all uphill since.

Boise State has grown into a staple of the Top 25 polls and a team nobody looks forward to playing.

It’s absolutely possible that in the next few years, everything just said about the Broncos applies to Appalachian State as well.
