SEC Football: Each team’s top Heisman Trophy candidate for 2020
By Dante Pryor
Jamie Newman transferred to Georgia to win a championship and prove he can play at the highest level of college football. While at Wake Forest, the toughest competition he faced was Clemson. He might be playing for the best team in the SEC East, but he faces much better defenses than he faced in the ACC.
Newman’s an intriguing dark horse because this is the most talented skill group he’s been around. He is a legit candidate to get to New York because he’s at Georgia. He developed well at Wake. Can he put up numbers against better competition?
He certainly has the players around him to do so. Unlike Kelly Bryant who made the jump from the ACC to the SEC, Newman is on a much better team. He’s the likely starter unless JT Daniels gets a waiver. The redshirt senior has all of the tools to thrive in new offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s offense.
Georgia feels strongly their window to win is now. Newman is the trigger man, but he does not have to be the offense. If he can distribute the ball with accuracy and put up numbers — and he should — Newman has every opportunity to have a big season in Athens.
