SEC Football: Each team’s top Heisman Trophy candidate for 2020
By Dante Pryor
When you think of Ty Chandler, think former Volunteers running back Alvin Kamara. If Tennessee makes a run in the SEC East, the senior running back made a huge leap. The quarterback room at Tennessee is average and two of its three leading receivers are gone.
Expect Tennessee to lean heavily on their running game. That means many more carries for Chandler. The Vols did use a running back by committee approach last season. They need one of those running backs to step out and take the reins if they are to take the next step.
Chandler needs both the “Cam factor” and “Burrow principle” in order to punch his ticket to New York City. The Volunteers have good skill players but not the level of Alabama. He needs a level up statistically as well.
Chandler does have a good offensive line in front of him and he is explosive with the ball in his hands. It will be interesting to see how many touches he gets. Running backs need 2,000-yard seasons and big statistics in other areas — like receiving — in order to be considered for the Heisman.
If Chandler gets enough touches and produces an unbelievable season, he could very well punch his ticket to New York City.
