After multiple seasons on the hot seat, Clay Helton will bring a Pac-12 title to USC football in 2020. Here’s why the Trojans will win the Pac-12.

Year after year, it appears that Clay Helton is coaching for his job. His seat has been the country’s hottest for multiple seasons, and that is true again in 2020. How do you cool that seat off? The answer is simple, you do it by winning.

Winning five of the last six in the regular season gave Helton another year in Los Angeles, and now he’s set to make it pay off in a big way. If he can go all the way and bring home a Pac-12 Championship in 2020, then job security won’t be a concern anytime soon.

How can he and the Trojans do so? A multitude of reasons.

He brings back a quarterback that had a breakout year in 2019. He also brings back virtually all of his defense. Each of those will be boosted by big upgrades to his coaching staff, including the growth of Graham Harrell as a playcaller in his second year as offensive coordinator, and the hiring of Todd Orlando to coach the defense.

The USC fan base has become increasingly frustrated with Helton and company in his time in Los Angeles, but Trojan brass in the past have been patient.

The new athletic director, under a new president, elected to keep Helton on for stability’s sake, and there’s a good chance they’ll be rewarded with more than just stability in 2020.
