How will Kansas football fare in 2020?

This season will not be easy for the Kansas Jayhawks as they are using this season to develop the talent they are carefully recruiting for. A four-win season is not impossible for the Jayhawks to achieve. This would be the best season since 2009.

Here is the breakdown of the Jayhawks schedule for 2020:

  • Game 1: vs. New Hampshire (W) – No game is guaranteed with a young and inexperienced Jayhawks team but coach Miles won’t let them lose in this manner.
  • Game 2: at Baylor (L) – The Jayhawks start their conference play on the road against a new Baylor Bears team expecting to not miss a beat.
  • Game 3: vs. Boston College (L) – Boston College will be looking for revenge for their embarrassing loss to the Jayhawks last season.
  • Game 4: at Coastal Carolina (W) – Just like Boston College gets revenge for their embarrassing, the Jayhawks will look for revenge on the Chanticleers for their loss last season.
  • Game 5: vs. Iowa State (L) – Cyclones quarterback Brock Purdy alone will be a huge factor for this victory versus Kansas.
  • Game 6: at Kansas State (L) – Year one with a new head coach went for Kansas State than it did for the Jayhawks last season.
  • Game 7: vs. Oklahoma State (L) – The defense will have an absolute hard time stopping Heisman Trophy darkhorse candidate in running back Chuba Hubbard.
  • Game 8: at West Virginia (L) – The Mountaineers are nowhere near a conference championship contention team but they will handle the Jayhawks in their home stadium.
  • Game 9: vs. Texas (L) – Last year, the Jayhawks almost sneaked their way to a shocking upset but the Longhorns will be more prepared.
  • Game 10: at Texas Tech (L) – While the offense will keep them in the game, the Jayhawks’ defense won’t continually stop a highly productive Red Raiders offense.
  • Game 11: at Oklahoma (L) – The Sooners are projected to carry the Big 12 title crown into a potential playoff run once again.
  • Game 12: vs. TCU (L) – The Horned Frogs are looking to be the surprise team of the Big 12 and will be contained to a potentially mentally worn-down Jayhawks team.

Prediction: 2-10 (0-9 Big 12)

As projected, the Jayhawks are looking into another rough season for the upcoming season much like 2019. This is a rebuilding process that will take several years as a result of poor expectations that has given to the football program. They have hired a national championship-winning head coach in Les Miles because they want to bring a winning culture back to the football program.

There are two games that Kansas expects to win against with those games being against New Hampshire and at Coastal Carolina. There are several games that the Jayhawks can find some surprising victories against Boston College, at West Virginia and at Texas Tech. If Kansas can find a way to beat a conference foe on the road then the projected low-win season will not be in vain.

This season will be all about the development of the players that remain before Miles personally recruited and the initiation of the young players full of potential. The Jayhawks have relied on former junior college players and transfers to attempt them for a short-term basis but Miles looks to change that.

This season can be successful in terms of seeing the younger players develop and accept the roles given to them by the coaching staff. Expect some younger players to step throughout the season and potentially take some starting jobs. These young players will pivotal in the development of the Jayhawks program that looks to win more games.
