ACC Football: Each team’s top Heisman Trophy candidate for 2020
By Dante Pryor
Jordan Mason is one of the few running backs on this list. They — the running backs — are all on this list for the same reason; they are the steadiest parts of their offense. Mason fits the bill.
The Yellow Jackets are still trying to find their offensive identity; Mason is a consistent force.
Their offensive line is a veteran group of seniors and graduate transfers. There is a lot of uncertainty at quarterback this season — quarterbacks completed just 46 percent of their passes last season. Redshirt sophomore James Graham got the lion’s share of snaps last season, and Geoff Collins signed two quarterbacks in recruiting the 2020 recruiting cycle.
Though the Yellow Jackets have veteran receivers who will likely start this season, the lack of stability at the quarterback position means they will lean on Mason and the running back group more this season. Expect the junior running back to get a lot more carries this season.
If the Yellow Jackets make an improbable run in the Coastal, it will be due to a 2,100-yard, 25-touchdown season from Mason as the catalyst for their success. He’ll have to be the steadying factor for their offense if they succeed.
