Central Michigan Football: Will Chippewas sustain momentum after surprising 2019?
How will Central Michigan football fare in 2020?
These predictions will look a little different due to the Big Ten going to conference only play due to the COVID-19 pandemic and that will cause CMU to lose games against Nebraska and Northwestern.
- Game 1: vs. San Jose State (W) — The Spartans have a tough offense, but CMU finds a way to win the season opener with their defense.
- Game 2: at Nebraska — As of right now, canceled due to COVID-19
- Game 3: at Northwestern — As of right now, canceled due to COVID-19
- Game 4: vs. Bryant (W) — Another home game for Central Michigan will result in a win vs the FCS Bryant Bulldogs.
- Game 5: at Eastern Michigan (L) — Chris Creighton has a solid program going at Eastern Michigan and they will be a tough out on the road.
- Game 6: at Northern Illinois (W) — The Huskies are expected to be one of the worst teams in the conference and the Chippewas should get the road win.
- Game 7: vs. Western Michigan (L) — Western Michigan is going to field an explosive offense and are well coached and will pull the slight upset here.
- Game 8: vs. Miami (OH) (W) — In a rematch of last years MAC championship game, the Chippewas get the win at home.
- Game 9: vs. Ohio (W) — Frank Solich has this program playing well year in and year out, but the new quarterback and offense should be clicking at this point.
- Game 10: at Toledo (L) — Toledo is one of the toughest places to play in the conference and are an explosive team and will be a bad matchup for the shaky CMU secondary.
- Game 11: vs. Ball State (L) — The Cardinals will have the offense to match CMU and will win in a shootout.
- Game 12: at Kent State (W) — The Golden Flashes were a pleasant surprise in 2019 making and winning a bowl game, but they may be in for a bit of a down year in 2020.
Final Record: 6-4, 4-4 MAC
Central Michigan may benefit because they avoid two likely losses in Nebraska and Northwestern. I expect the MAC to be tough this season and road contests against Eastern Michigan and Toledo won’t be easy and neither will games against Ball State and Western Michigan.
If they can find a quarterback to play at a consistent level and the secondary can grow up, Central Michigan may find itself back in the MAC title game.
