Of all schools, somehow North Carolina is becoming one that has frequent Heisman contenders at the quarterback position.

After Tar Heel quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was drafted No. 2 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, UNC had a couple of slow years at the helm. Then freshman Sam Howell threw for 3,641 yards, 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Seemingly out of nowhere, this kid burst onto the national scene and is highly considered to be a Heisman candidate for 2020.

It’s always scary when a player comes out of nowhere with stats like Howell, but it’s even more frightening when they didn’t come from a powerhouse football school. Like I said, Trubisky had an incredible season three years prior to Howell, but even that paled in comparison to his freshman season. Howell nearly matched the alma mater’s stats in yards and efficiency and actually surpassed his touchdown total by eight.

He only gave the ‘Heels seven wins in 2019, but expect that number to increase as North Carolina works on the defensive side of the ball.

Howell returns his top five receivers and his leading tight end, making this offense look like a scary opponent for ACC defenses. He lost one lineman to the draft, but the rest will return. We should see some of his rookie mistakes disappear as he’s on track for an incredible season.
