Clemson’s defense will ultimately suffer the most from the losses to the NFL Draft. Anchors of the defense such as Isaiah Simmons, A.J. Ferrell, and Tanner Muse will no longer be available for the Tigers, so returning players will undoubtedly have to step up.

One guy who will be a key to the Clemson defense is returning linebacker James Skalski, who is entering his final season of college eligibility. He has a plethora of experience, and brings a lot to the table. He will be able to continue providing leadership to a Clemson defense that will most certainly need it.

Skalski’s importance was put on full display in the national championship when he was ejected for targeting. His absence made it near impossible for Clemson to put a stop, or even contain, LSU’s dynamic offense. That second half showed just how vital Skalski will be to the Tiger defense this year.

Last year was Skalski’s true breakout season, accounting for roughly three times as many tackles as his prior career best. His involvement in 90 tackles and 4.5 sacks last year highlighted his value.

Skalski has been an anchor for the Clemson defense and will continue to be. His leadership and talent will allow him to slide into the role of a team veteran that was vacated due to the loss of previous veterans.

If he keeps up the good work, look for Skalski to end up on the ACC All-Conference team.
