How will Georgia Tech football fare in 2020?

The ACC has just made a decision to run a conference-only slate with one non-conference matchup, which could affect games against UCF and the annual rivalry with Georgia. These predictions could change a lot between the time this is published and the actual season.

  • Game 1: vs. Clemson (L) — Georgia Tech is once again opening the season vs Clemson and the result should be the same as last years.
  • Game 2: vs. Gardner Webb (W) — The Yellow Jackets get their first win of the season and hope to avoid another FCS loss.
  • Game 3: vs. UCF (L) — The Knights will have a high-powered offense and will be too much for Tech, even at home.
  • Game 4: at North Carolina (L) — The Tar Heels are the Coastal division favorites and will be tough to beat behind quarterback Sam Howell and a high-powered offense.
  • Game 5: at Virginia Tech (L) — The Jackets need to hope they can rally after such a tough early schedule that includes a trip to Lane Stadium in Blacksburg.
  • Game 6: vs. Virginia (W) — I think this is where the Yellow Jackets can get a win, against a reloading Virginia team that will be without quarterback Bryce Perkins.
  • Game 7: at Pitt (L) — The Panthers could be a sneaky good pick to win the Coastal and will be tough to beat on the road.
  • Game 8: at Syracuse (L) — I think the Jackets could get the win here, but Syracuse is always tough at home and should be looking to make a bowl game after missing one in 2019.
  • Game 9: vs. Duke (W) — The Blue Devils will be turning to Clemson transfer Chase Brice to lead a stagnant offense, but Tech should get the home win.
  • Game 10: vs. Notre Dame (L) — The Fighting Irish are looking to get back to the playoff and Georgia Tech will just merely be in the way.
  • Game 11: vs. Miami (L) — The Hurricanes are looking to bounce back after being a major disappointment in a major way in 2019 and will be looking for revenge after being upset by the Yellow Jackets last year.
  • Game 12: at Georgia (L) — Georgia is just on another planet talent-wise than Georgia Tech right now and it might be a few years before the Jackets are ready for this game.

Final Record: 3-9, 2-6 ACC

This will be a classic case of a team being improved but the record not showing it. Tech is just too young and does not have the adequate quarterback play to win vs teams like Clemson, Notre Dame, Georgia and UCF. That four game stretch vs Pitt, Syracuse, Duke and Virginia will be the best opportunity for the Yellow Jackets to earn some wins.
