Boston College football in serious rebuilding mode in 2020
How will Boston College football fare in 2020?
The Boston College Eagles will have a long journey to rebuilding into an efficient program that will win more than seven games every season. They have the history of building high-caliber players but they will need the right coaching installations to utilize the talented team.
If the ACC enacts its conference-only schedule, they will have eight games already schedule with more teams in the Coastal division to play.
Here is the breakdown of the schedule for the Eagles in 2020.
- Game 1: vs. Syracuse (L) – The Eagles start their season with a tough conference loss against an Orange offense that looks to accelerate their passing game.
- Game 2: vs. Ohio (W) – Boston College’s rush defense will be the main difference against a dangerous Bobcats team.
- Game 3: at Kansas (W) – The Eagles will have a much less difficult time defeating a team in a complete rebuild.
- Game 4: vs. Purdue (L) – The Boilermakers have a more aggressive set of immediate playmakers on both sides of the ball than Boston College.
- Game 5: vs. Clemson (L) – Clemson is projected to have another top-five scoring offense and defense this season as they make another title chase.
- Game 6: vs. Louisville (L) – The Cardinals are set to have a dynamic and explosive offense, which will be too much for the Eagles’ defense to handle.
- Game 7: at Virginia Tech (L) – Virginia Tech returns 10 starters on the defensive side of the ball from last season, which will make it more difficult for the Eagles in an away game.
- Game 8: vs. Holy Cross (W) – If the Patriot League keeps their football season postponed, the Eagles will not get an easy win against the Crusaders.
- Game 9: at NC State (L) – The Wolfpack return their star skilled players on the offensive side of the ball to establish a rebound season.
- Game 10: at Florida State (L) – Florida State comes back with a brand new mindset on offense and defense as well as an experienced roster.
- Game 11: vs. North Carolina (L) – The Eagles’ secondary will not be able to suppress the high-caliber passing offense of the Tarheels.
- Game 12: at Wake Forest (L) – Boston College finished their rough 2020 campaign with a loss to a Wake Forest offense looking to become highly explosive on offense once again.
Prediction: 3-9, 0-8 ACC
The Boston College Eagles are on a path that will require a couple of seasons of serious restructuring. The biggest objectives that the Eagles will be judged by, with their new head coach, will be to see if there is a significant improvement on the field.
There are several games where the Eagles can win such as the game in Week 1 against Syracuse, their matchup at NC State and finally, their game against Wake Forest.
While losing A.J. Dillon will be a huge loss to the offense, they will have to find a player that can create as much impact. New starting running back David Bailey is a player that can take the role of an impact player and the leader of the evolving offense.
So much of the passing game depends on the eligibility of Phil Jurkovec. The Eagles will need to prepare for the season as if Dennis Grosel will be their starting quarterback in 2020. Whoever will be the starting quarterback in 2020, they will have a stout and reliable offensive line.
The Eagles have much more work to do on the defensive side of the ball as they were one of the worst Power Five defenses in the nation. The most efficient unit, once again, will be the linebacker corps as they return all three of their starters from last season.
While both the defensive line and the secondary have potential, they will need to be coached efficiently and carefully established in Lukabu’s new systems.
