How will Virginia football fare in 2020?

The ACC made the decision to go with a 10-game conference schedule with a plus one and that schedule was just recently released.

The Cavs would have lost what was going to be a tough non-conference game against Georgia, but will be challenged nonetheless by playing Clemson, North Carolina, Miami and of course Virginia Tech. Here’s how the schedule will play out for Bronco Mendenhall’s squad.

  • Game 1: at Virginia Tech (L) — It will be strange to see this game so early in the season. Virginia will look to make it two in a row vs the Hokies, but Virginia Tech is too strong on both sides of the ball.
  • Game 1: at Clemson (L) — This will likely be a very bad loss in for Virginia in an ACC title game rematch.
  • Game 3: vs. NC State (W) — The Wolfpack are looking to rebound after a terrible season a year ago, but Virginia gets their first ACC win of 2020 at home.
  • Game 4: at Wake Forest (L) — Wake Forest is a tough team to beat on the road and will have one of the best young quarterbacks in the league in Sam Hartman.
  • Game 5: at Miami (L) — Miami was one of three teams to upend Virginia in the regular season and the Hurricanes are expected to challenge for a spot in the ACC championship behind a new offense and fearsome pass rush.
  • Game 6: vs. North Carolina (W) — I’m going out on a limb and picking a decent sized upset here because I think North Carolina is in for a big season and should challenge for a spot in the championship game but Virginia will knock off the Tar Heels.
  • Game 7: vs. Louisville (L) — I don’t think that the Cavaliers will have the offense to take advantage of a suspect Cardinals defense and this Louisville offense will be one of the best in the conference.
  • Game 8: vs. Duke (W) — The Blue Devils will be counting on Clemson transfer Chase Brice to lift up a struggling offense, but the Blue Devils will be one of the worst teams in the conference and won’t score much on Virginia’s defense.
  • Game 9: at Florida State (L) — The Seminoles will have too many athletes and speed for Virginia to get a second straight win over them. FSU wins a close one at home.
  • Game 10: vs. Boston College (W) — Like Duke, Boston College will be one of the worst teams in the league and are starting with a brand new coaching staff.

Final Record: 4-6

Virginia has a lot of uncertainties on the offensive side of the ball, especially at quarterback. The defense should be better and the Cavaliers will be well-coached, I don’t think it will be enough to consistently be able to win vs the top teams in the league. They will not be an easy out for anyone not named Clemson on the schedule however.
