18. player. 847. Pick Analysis. postponed vs. Virginia. Scouting Report. 0-0. Virginia Tech Hokies

Virginia Tech was forced to postpone their season opener against rival Virginia, as a spike in COVID-19 cases in Blacksburg made it too dangerous to play their annual battle for the Commonwealth Cup as the season opener. Transmission rates have been rising on both campuses since the start of the new academic year, leading both teams to opt for prudence rather than risking complicity in further outbreaks at the two schools.

If the Hokies and Cavaliers are unable to reschedule their regular-season showdown, it would mark the first time since 1969 that the two teams failed to meet on the football field.

Thus Justin Fuente’s team awaits its first contest of the season. While they have yet to take the field, that won’t prevent the Hokies from launching up into the AP Top 25 proper after falling just outside the rankings in the preseason. Depending on whether or not Virginia Tech is able to get outbreaks on campus under control, the Hokies are now scheduled to open the 2020 season on September 26 at Lane Stadium against NC State.
