13. Duke Blue Devils (0-1)

The Blue Devils had the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the ropes early in this game. Duke drove down the field on the Irish defense, but they could not score touchdowns. Anytime you play a team the caliber of the Irish, you have to get in the endzone. Field goals will not do.

What you saw was something that, until recently, David Cutcliffe was able to mask; there was a clear separation of talent between the Irish and the Blue Devils. One of the reasons he was able to conceal this was excellent quarterback play. Anthony Boone, Thomas Sirk and Daniel Jones could cover for the lack of elite skill players in Durham.

Maybe Chase Brice can do that once again for the Blue Devils. There were flashes in this game. They were just overwhelmed by Notre Dame’s talent toward the end of the game. Expect to see Duke beat inferior teams and lose to superior teams this season.
