College Football Rankings 2020: Projected AP Top 25 for Week 5
By Zach Bigalke
LSU looked nothing like the team that took down everyone in their path en route to the College Football Playoff championship last season. The Tigers collapsed against unranked Mississippi State at home, falling 44-34 for their first loss since 2018. As a result, Ed Orgeron’s crew is going to fall hard from their No. 6 spot into the mid-teens when the next AP Top 25 comes out on Sunday.
Myles Brennan could not live up to the standard set last season by Heisman winner Joe Burrow. Brennan did throw for 345 yards and three touchdowns on 27-of-46 passing, but the new starter also tossed two interceptions and lost 37 yards on the ground. He got little help from the backfield, as the Tigers finished with only 80 net rushing yards. The LSU defense also struggled, coughing up more than 600 passing yards to Stanford transfer KJ Costello.
The SEC championship might already be out of reach for the Tigers, but they cannot completely write off this season after one game. Next week they get the chance to catch their breath and regroup with a road game against Vanderbilt.
