College Football Rankings 2020: Projected AP Top 25 for Week 5
By Zach Bigalke
Virginia Tech won’t be denied a spot in the AP Top 25 this week after they finally got on to the field for the first time this season in Week 4. The Hokies welcomed NC State to Blacksburg and promptly sent the Wolfpack back to Raleigh with their tails between their legs after a blowout victory for the home team. Justin Fuente’s team looks like they could be a surprise this year in the ACC if they keep up these types of performances.
The ground game was dynamic for the Hokies, racking up more than 200 rushing yards as a team just in the first half. Khalil Herbert piled up 1104 yards in his first six carries and punching in a touchdown along the way. Virginia Tech’s defense was just as formidable, forcing a pair of Bailey Hockman interceptions. At quarterback, Braxton Burmeister and Quincy Patterson II traded snaps and were a combined 10-of-16 for 135 yards and two touchdowns through three quarters.
It was the kind of complete performance that Virginia Tech needed to stay up this week in an FBS field that just bloated back up to full size. The Hokies will look to maintain Top 25 status again in Week 5 when they travel to North Carolina to face Duke.
