West Virginia football: 3 overreactions to Week 4 Oklahoma State loss

1. Defense is one of the best in school history
This West Virginia defense is one of the best in school history — plain and simple. And they’ve played just two games this season, but there are plenty of holdovers from last year’s squad with additions elsewhere that are greater than the pieces they lost.

The front seven can hold their own against any opponent they’ll face, but we all knew that coming into the season. Led by Dante and Darius Stills filling rush lanes and pressuring the quarterback, everything looks so simple for this unit. Arizona graduate-transfer Tony Fields has been a welcomed addition, too, leading the team in tackles in each contest this season. Alonzo Addae and VanDarius Cowan are two more transfers who’re making plays.
But do you want to know the worst thing about this West Virginia defense? They can’t score points! It’s not really their job to, either, but with the offense struggling to hang enough on the score board, it sure would be nice if they could.
We almost saw Fields return an interception for a score against the Cowboys, but he was tackled at the Pokes 42. The offense could only muster three points after the pick, but they came right back and forced another punt by Oklahoma State.
This is typically how it goes in Morgantown, though — the Mountaineers’ either have a great offense or a great defense, never both. Imagine this group with the Grier-Sills-Jennings trio of 2018? I can feel Texas and Oklahoma fans trembling from here.
