College Football 2020: Top 5 Heisman Trophy contenders after Week 4
By Nick Fiore
3. KJ Costello, QB, Mississippi State
KJ Costello and new head coach Mike Leach led Bulldogs were the story of the weekend. There were some skeptics about Leach and how successful his air-raid system could be in the SEC, especially in a shortened offseason. Leach and Costello shut up those doubters after knocking off reigning national champion LSU.

Costello threw for an SEC record 623 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. He shattered the previous SEC record held by Georgia’s Eric Zeirer when he threw for 544 yards in 1993. He transferred over to Starkville from Stanford this past offseason and he looks like the perfect guy to run Leach’s system.
Mississippi State probably isn’t going to win the SEC which hurts Costello’s Heisman chances; Lamar Jackson has been the only player in the College Football Playoff era to win the Heisman and not make the final four.
Regardless of how the Bulldogs’ season goes, Costello should put up monster numbers under Leach, and if he continues his play from Saturday, he could receive an invite to New York City come December.
