College Football Rankings 2020: Projected AP Top 25 for Week 6
By Zach Bigalke
Texas in many ways was the Big 12’s last big hope of landing in the College Football Playoff this season. Oklahoma already blemished their record in Week 4, a weekend where the Longhorns needed overtime to take down Texas Tech. They didn’t even have the opportunity to force extra time this week, as TCU came to Austin and downed Tom Herman’s team 33-31. The defeat will push Texas down the AP Top 25 somewhere into the high teens or low 20s.
They won’t fall completely out of the poll, though, as enough voters will only vote for teams currently playing so that Texas will get enough votes to stay up another week. Sam Ehlinger threw for 236 yards and four touchdowns, but he completed fewer than half of his passes and tossed an interception that the Horned Frogs turned into points that covered the winning margin. The Longhorns defense gave up 231 passing yards to Max Duggan and 226 rushing yards to TCU.
Herman’s charges must regroup rapidly, with the Red River Shootout looming in Dallas against Oklahoma in Week 6. That game surprisingly set itself up as a Big 12 elimination game of sorts after both the Longhorns and the Sooners stumbled before they could reach the Cotton Bowl.
