Georgia Football: 3 takeaways from statement win over Auburn
2. Auburn’s defense had no answers
This was a very disappointing effort by the Auburn defense. Coming off a great 2nd half against Kentucky last week, it seemed as if Auburn was gearing up to take the next step. They could not stop Georgia at any point tonight. Auburn was only able to force two punts, did not force a turnover, and gave up 442 total yards of offense.
Another stat that may sting for Tiger fans, Georgia was able to gain five-plus yards in 36 of 73 plays. So for nearly half of the game, Georgia was picking up five yards every time they snapped the ball.
To be fair, this was a team effort and Auburn’s offense could not get in the end zone all night. Bo Nix missed on some throws, the offensive line allowed major pressure, and the running game was nonexistent. Only picking up 216 yards of offense and no touchdowns is just as big of a detriment to the game as the defense was. However, it was the defense (or lack of) that stood out more to me.
It was a brutal night at the office for Kevin Steele as his unit was outclassed on the ground and in the air. The good news is that there is plenty of time in the season to correct these mistakes. But if things don’t change soon, those boys in Tuscaloosa will be licking their chops in preparation for November 28th.
