Big 12 Football Power Rankings, Week 6: League wide open after crazy weekend
By Phil Poling
Last weekend’s victory over the Sooners catapulted the Wildcats into our top five, and their win versus Texas Tech keeps them here. A come-from-behind 31-21 victory is special, but especially when you’re deploying a backup quarterback.
Will Howard did well under center, though, completing 7-of-12 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. Deuce Vaughn continues his upward trajectory, as the freshman compiled 194 all-purpose yards and scored twice.
They’ll play TCU next, on Oct. 10, at 4 p.n. ET on FOX.
This is the Iowa State team everybody expected to see coming into the season — one that’s competing and beating Oklahoma. And that’s exactly what Mat Campbell and the Cyclones did in Ames on Saturday night, winning 37-30 and outscoring the Sooners 24-13 in the second half.
Quarterback Brock Purdy completed just half of his 24 pass attempts for 254 yards, but it was Breece Hall and the running game that paced the Cyclones’ attack. Hall managed 139 yards and two scores on 28 carries — a 5.0 yards-per-carry average. The Cyclone defense also played an important role, living in the Sooners’ backfield all game as they racked up eight tackles-for-loss and two sacks.
They cracked the Top 25 with their victory over Oklahoma and will play host to Texas Tech on Oct. 10.
After a dominant showing on Saturday, albeit against Kansas, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are the team to beat in the Big 12 — and that’s why they’re No. 1 in our Week 6 power rankings. A win is a win is a win. But absolutely demolishing the Jayhawks by a score of 47-7 was a statement by the Pokes; they’re here, and the road to a Big 12 championship runs through Stillwater.
They struggled in their season-opener against Tulsa, winning just 16-7, and outlasted West Virginia by a score of 27-13 the following week. They finally put it all together against the Jayhawks, though.
The teams two stars — Chuba Hubbard and Tylan Wallace — posted monstrous numbers at their respective positions. Hubbard rumbled for 145 yards and two scores on 20 carries, while Wallace caught nine passes for 148 yards and two scores of his own. This was all with freshman Shane Illingworth under center, too, as the original starter, Spencer Sanders, continues battling an ankle injury.
