College football 2020: Ranking the 3 worst losses from Week 5
3. Auburn lacked offensive firepower in loss at Georgia
The No. 7 Auburn Tigers were looking to make a serious run for the SEC West with LSU down and No. 13 Texas A&M losing big to No. 2 Alabama. But first, they would have to get through their oldest rival in No. 4 Georgia. The Tigers felt comfortable competing with the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball to make it a close game.
On Saturday, they made it anything but a close game as they were able to create a spark on the offensive side of the ball. The Tigers only managed to account for 216 total yards and 15 first downs against the Bulldogs’ defense.
Their offensive line played one of the worst games they have had in years. They were barely able to create any push in the run game as the Tigers account for 39 yards on the ground in 22 rushing attempts for an average of 1.8 yards per rush. The line also allowed three sacks and six tackles for loss to the Bulldogs.
Auburn’s defense did not fare much better against the Bulldogs offense still without transfer quarterback J.T. Daniels. The Tigers allowed 442 total yards including 202 yards from the Bulldogs rushing game. Georgia ran the ball 45 times as they gashed the Tigers defense for an average of 4.5 yards per rush.
This huge loss to the Bulldogs puts the Tigers in only a one-game deficit behind in the SEC West. The problem for the Tigers is now how much vulnerability the offensive line and defense showed overall.
