Many familiar faces return to the Wolverines’ defense

The defense will be Michigan’s strength and key to a good season. The defense will be critical in the first part of the season as the offense learns to gel. A year ago, the defense finished the season ranked 11th in the nation in total defense. Defensive coordinator Don Brown would love for his unit to be just as good this season.

The defensive line is going to be solid. Defensive end Kwity Paye opted to return for his senior year. Opposite Paye is another star in Aidan Hutchinson. Carlo Kemp returns at defensive tackle after being granted a sixth year of eligibility.

At linebacker, Cameron McGrone had a breakout season a year ago and is back manning the middle. Michael Barrett and Josh Ross, back from injury, will be patrolling the outside linebacker positions.

The secondary may have talent but lacks experience. The safety duo of Brad Hawkins and Daxton Hill will be key and Hill looks to be a superstar in the making after a solid freshman season. The cornerbacks could be a trouble spot at first but Ambry Thomas has the most experience at the position. He recorded a team high three interceptions a year ago and will look to add to the total this season.
