3. Clayton Tune can make Houston a legit AAC threat

Entering this matchup, all eyes were on BYU’s Zach Wilson, but he wasn’t the only quarterback who put on a show. Houston’s Clayton Tune had a solid 2020 debut against Tulane last week, throwing for 319 yards and two touchdowns.

This didn’t warrant much national recognition, but tonight’s performance surely will.

Unfortunately for Tune, his fantastic night won’t get near enough attention due to the aforementioned Wilson. This 310-yard, two-touchdown game is nothing to write off. Despite losing former star quarterback D’Eriq King to Miami, this Houston offense to be in good hands for the foreseeable future.

Houston was ultimately not able to finish off this one, but there is still a plethora of hope for this team. One bonus is that this was a non-conference game, so it will not affect Houston’s run for the AAC championship — of which they are more than capable of winning. The defense will certainly play a crucial role in this, though.

The race for the American is quite possibly more up in the air than ever this year. Teams like Cincinnati, UCF, SMU, Memphis and Houston all have a legitimate shot at the title. While this is great for the conference, it significantly reduces the margin of error. If Houston wants to win the conference, they’ll need more performances like this out of their quarterback.
