In only its fourth season of FBS existence and just its 18th season of football at any level, Coastal Carolina is going to climb into one of the last spots of the AP Top 25 this week. The Chanticleers are now 4-0 and the new top dog in the Sun Belt after taking down No. 21 Louisiana on the road on Wednesday night. As a result the Ragin’ Cajuns will drop out of the poll while Coastal Carolina gets a bump above the cut.

The two Sun Belt division leaders pushed each other to the limit in Lafayette, trading punches quarter after quarter. Ultimately it came down to which team had the ball at the end of the game, and it was Coastal Carolina that lined up Massimo Biscardi to kick the game-winning field goal from 40 yards out. Grayson McCall threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns on 17-of-24 passing while adding 45 yards and a score on the ground in the win.

Next week the Chanticleers should be wearing a number next to their name for their Week 8 clash at home against Georgia Southern. With a Power Five win to their name (albeit at Kansas), Coastal Carolina has as good a case as any other Group of Five contender at the moment for inclusion in the rankings.
