With their 24-21 takedown of No. 17 Iowa State at home on Saturday, Oklahoma State played their way past Georgia into the top five of the AP Top 25. The Cowboys ceded an early lead to their visitors in Stillwater, but once they took the lead before halftime they never allowed the Cyclones to reclaim the lead. The win eliminated left just two teams still undefeated in Big 12 play and put the Pokes in the College Football Playoff discussion more firmly heading toward November.

Spencer Sanders didn’t have the greatest game in his return as starting quarterback, throwing for 235 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions on 20-of-29 passing. Sanders did add 71 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The big star in the backfield was Chuba Hubbard, who piled up 140 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Hubbard was outplayed by Iowa State’s Breece Hall, who notched 185 yards and a score on just 20 carries.

In Week 9 the Cowboys host Texas on Halloween, a game which could prove a trap if Mike Gundy’s team gets caught looking ahead to the November 7 trip to face Kansas State in a duel between Big 12 leaders. At this point only Oklahoma State has any chance of reaching the College Football Playoff, but they put themselves in stronger position to do so with this week’s win.
