Penn State football: 3 takeaways from thrilling overtime loss at Indiana
By Riley Platt
3. Indiana could cause more trouble in the Big Ten
While the Hoosiers were only a touchdown underdog, not many people were giving this team a chance to pull off the upset today. However, they did just that.
Indiana lived off of Penn State’s errors, taking advantage of turnovers and miss3ed field goals all day long. In fact, it was an error by PSU running back Devyn Ford that even gave IU a chance to send the game to overtime. By running into the endzone and scoring, it gave the Hoosiers one more chance to to go tie the game up. This would ultimately spell doom for Penn State.
While this upset can be largely attributed to Penn State blunders, Indiana deserves credit for this win. It wasn’t always pretty, but they got the job done. By capitalizing off of their opponent’s mistakes, they pulled off a massive win for a program that hasn’t defeated a top-ten team since 1987.
Three words: Michael Penix Jr. After losing quarterback Payton Ramsey to Northwestern, Penix Jr. won the job and his 2020 debut would not be an easy one. The Tampa native may not have had the most eye-catching stat line, but he was oh so clutch at the end of this game. That drive to tie the game showed what Penix Jr. is truly capable of, as it seemed a “crunch time” switch had flipped in him. His touchdown pass in overtime was incredible, but it is the two point conversion run that will go down in history.
While the Hoosiers may be on the tougher side of the Big Ten, this doesn’t mean that they won’t put up a fight this year. Sure, the chances of them winning the division are minute, but they could continue to sink traditional powerhouses’ seasons as they roll through the rest of this season. Watch out for the Hoosiers — your team could be next.
