Cincinnati Football: 3 takeaways from dominant win over Memphis
By Dante Pryor
2. Cincinnati is clearl the most complete team in the AAC
There are three phases in the game of football, offense, defense and special teams. Cincinnati has proven over the course of this season they are the most complete football team in the AAC and one of the most complete in college football. The Bearcats are sound offensively, defensively and in the kicking game.
Cincinnati defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman must have studied the Georgia defense this offseason. The Bearcats defense employed a “boa constrictor” defense against the Memphis Tigers today. Memphis had four three-and-outs today, and three drives ended on downs. Cincinnati held Memphis to just one double-digit scoring drive this afternoon.
Offensively, the game plan today was to take advantage of Memphis’ maligned secondary. Desmond Ridder was outstanding throwing the football early in the game. Ridder also showed great patience and vision in both the zone read and RPO-game. The offensive line controlled the scrimmage line, giving Ridder time to throw and open holes for Gerrid Doaks and Jerome Ford.
The Bearcats secondary was outstanding against the Memphis passing game. Though the Tigers had over 300 yards passing, 136 of those yards came on one play. Also, Memphis had to throw much of the game because they were playing from behind.
These types of performances make it tough for Cincy to beat.
