Liberty Football: 3 takeaways from dramatic win over Virginia Tech

2. Virginia Tech’s play-calling is holding it back
At points in time last year, this was the same staff that thought Ryan Willis as their guy and sparingly played Hendon Hooker. His play and ability to run the football makes the entire offense. That is an issue as you can get away with having success against a weak defense as Liberty has.
However, this play calling isn’t going to have a lot of success against defenses similar to a Notre Dame or Clemson. The Hokies’ offense consists of dump off passes and zone reads, with receivers in motion. Although that is a way of getting your speed out in space, it also makes life easier for the secondary.
With no worry of getting beat deep, you can stack the box and keep your corners four yards from the wide receivers. Virginia Tech has talent at the skill position, but they’re not being utilized enough to be a dynamic offense, with multiple elements.
