2. The defense did enough to keep WVU in the game

When you face Sam Ehlinger, you know that your defense is going to have to key in on him and limit him. What West Virginia did was great, but the offense couldn’t respond.

Ehlinger would have to be the guy to beat the West Virginia defense and he didn’t do a ton of that, totaling 223 yards and two touchdowns and he completed less than 50 percent of his passes. West Virginia made him feel uncomfortable all day long with strong coverage by the secondary and he wasn’t able to break off many big runs with 12 carries and a long of just 13.

West Virginia entered the game with a fantastic game plan but it just wasn’t enough as the Mountaineers came up short but you can’t blame the defensive coaching staff.

Could the trenches have been won more by the Mountaineers? Sure, but that’s not a scheme issue and rather a talent issue. West Virginia just didn’t plug enough holes.
