2. Neither Adrian Martinez nor Luke McCaffrey got comfortable

Legendary head coach Steve Spurrier famously said, “If you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have any.” Ironically enough, Spurrier played two quarterbacks quite often.

Adrian Martinez played the majority of the game, but Luke McCaffrey appeared in the last two drives. Even after throwing an interception, McCaffrey was in the last drive for the Cornhuskers.

Was that indicative of Scott Frost’s lack of trust in Martinez in big situations? Does Frost feel McCaffrey is the best passer of the two quarterbacks? It is difficult to say which is the right question to ask. However, certainly, the quarterback position is far from settled. For Frost and the Huskers, it does not matter how much improvement Nebraska shows in other places; he has to develop the quarterback position.

Give the Northwestern defense credit, however. The Wildcats covered well all game. Despite registering one sack, the Wildcats did not let Martinez or McCaffrey get comfortable in the pocket with eight quarterback hurries on the day intercepting the Huskers twice.

In addition to the defense, it is clear Frost is still searching for dynamic playmakers. Wan’Dale Robinson is a fantastic player; Northwestern did a great job of taking him away.

When your primary option is taken away, neither quarterback have anyone else to get the ball to.
