Notre Dame Football: 3 takeaways from thrilling win over Clemson
3. Notre Dame played the best game of the Brian Kelly era
This was a tremendous performance by Notre Dame. They went toe to toe against the best team in college football and left it all on the field. While Clemson is missing two key players, they are still a great all around team. Battling against a Dabo Sweeney-led team is no easy feat and Brian Kelly had his team ready to fight.
The Irish defense played bend but don’t break defense for most of the night. They held Clemson to four field goals and were able to get off the field on third down (Clemson went 4-for-15 on third down). Forty points is a lot to give up, but they made enough stops to get the job done.
The running game was a bit stale after the 65-yard run by Williams. But once overtime hit, Williams and Book were back to gashing the Tigers on the ground. The Irish were able to rush for over 200 yards and got the key overtime touchdowns on the ground.
Ian Book made a crucial error with that fumble in the end zone, but showed great mental toughness by bouncing back to make the throw that put the Irish back in the game.
He has been looking for his signature moment as a member of the Fighting Irish. His throw to Avery Davis was the most important throw he made as a member of Notre Dame. Tonight he had a game that he will remember forever.
Brian Kelly has had many great moments as head coach of Notre Dame. He made the BCS National Championship back in 2013 after an undefeated season. He made a playoff appearance a few years back.
Winning this game proved he is able to battle with the heavyweights of college football. Now the Irish control their own destiny and have a playoff appearance within their sight.
