2. Miami’s defense helped keep this game close

After giving up 410 yards and 41 points last weekend to North Carolina State, the Hurricane defense gave up 24 points, including shutting out the Hokies in the fourth quarter. This week the Hurricanes needed the defense to pick up the slack as it took the offense a while to keep going.

Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker had issues getting comfortable all game as the Hurricane pass rush sacked him six times. Defensive end Jaelan Phillips was the star of the defense today with eight total tackles and two and a half sacks, including a crucial sack of Hendon Hooker on Tech’s only meaningful drive of the second half.

Not only did the defense shut out Virginia Tech in the fourth quarter, but the Hurricanes also shut out the Hokies the final 21 minutes of the game. The Hurricanes did not allow the Hokies to get past their own 43-yard line at that time.
