3. Georgia Southern (at Army)

Now head coach at Army, Jeff Monken got his start as a head coach at Georgia Southern. Monken was 38-16 in four seasons at Georgia Southern and oversaw their rise to the FBS level. While at West Point, he’s turned the Army football team from a doormat to power among FBS Independents. All of that is the intrigue behind a game that most people expect Army to win.

Here’s the thing, though, Georgia Southern is really good, too. Frankly, if it wasn’t for the rise of Coastal Carolina and a wild finish against a then ranked Louisiana team they’d be the Sun Belt’s top dog. They’re led by Shai Werts, who may not set the world on fire, but knows the system well and operates it at a very high level. He’s a tough runner and smart decision maker for Georgia Southern’s version of the option running game.

Possessions are going to be precious, largely because there may not be 20 passes thrown all game long. Between Werts and Army’s top passer Christian Anderson they’ve combined to only throw more than 10 times in seven games all season long. It may as well be a running clock, and it will likely only take one or two stops to win. In that is plenty of room for Army to slip up, and Georgia Southern to find a win.
