2. Oklahoma State struggles with injuries, consistency issues

Coming into this game, the Cowboys allowed the fewest amount of points in the Big 12 (107). Today, they allowed Oklahoma to score 21 points in the first nine minutes of action. They did eventually settle down and force Oklahoma to punt on three straight drives, but the damage was done.

Losing Spencer Sanders early and being down 21-0 put Oklahoma State in a deep ditch. Sanders eventually came back, but only in the fourth quarter after they were down 34-13. This resulted in their big freshman, Shane Illingworth, running the offense for the majority of the game.

This wasn’t the first time Illingworth has been thrusted into action unexpectedly. He started in two games this year against West Virginia and Kansas.

Unfortunately we’re not in Kansas anymore, and Illingworth had himself a long journey ahead of him. This game and environment proved to be too much for a young player as Illingworth finished 5-for-21 with 71 yards and one touchdown.

You may also be wondering where Chuba Hubbard was. Well, going down 21-0 early hampers the running game and forces a team to try and push the ball downfield. But Chuba was not able to do much with the limited carries he was given. He did break off a nice 29-yard rush, but if you take that away he had seven carries for 15 yards.

Oklahoma State did not come to Bedlam with their best football and fall to 5-2 as a result.
