College Football 2020: Surprises, awards by conference from Week 12

ACC

  • Offensive Player of the Week: Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong had an outstanding game in a non-conference win. He threw for 383 yards, four touchdown passes and zero interceptions. He also ran for 52 yards on only six carries in helping the Cavaliers to their fourth win of the season.
  • Defensive Player of the Week: Louisville defensive back Kei’Trel Clark had an interception for the Cardinals and he also recovered a fumble as Louisville shut out Syracuse. He helped the Cardinals’ secondary hold Syracuse to only 45 yards passing.
  • Special Teams Player of the Week: Pittsburgh kicker Alex Kessman made all four of his field goal attempts as well as connecting on all five of his extra point attempts. His longest field goal of the game was a 53-yarder and he contributed directly to 17 points in helping the Panthers defeat the Hokies.

Big Ten

  • Offensive Player of the Week: Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim ran the ball 25 times for 102 yards in helping the Gophers to a three-point victory over Purdue. He, most importantly, rushed for three touchdowns with two of them coming in the second half.
  • Defensive Player of the Week: Iowa defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon played very well in the Hawkeyes victory over Penn State. He had five tackles that included a quarterback sack as well as 1.5 tackles for a loss and a quarterback hurry. His biggest play of the game was when he returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown to put Penn State away.
  • Special Teams Player of the Week: Michigan kick returner Giles Jackson who had an impressive game against Rutgers. He returned four kicks for 159 yards for an average of 39.8 yards per return. His most impressive return was when he took a Rutgers kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.

Independent

  • Offensive Player of the Week: BYU quarterback Zach Wilson had yet again another great game. He threw for 212 yards including four touchdown passes and zero interceptions to lead the Cougars to their ninth win of the season. He rushed only one time for 33 yards and he continues to make a case for him to be considered for the Heisman Trophy.
  • Defensive Player of the Week: Army defensive back Cedrick Cunningham Jr. had 12 tackles in the Black Knights’ one-point victory over Georgia Southern. He had six solo tackles that included two tackles for loss. He helped control the Eagles’ passing game limiting Georgia Southern to only 136 passing yards.
  • Special Teams Player of the Week: BYU kicker Jake Oldroyd remained perfect on the season as he is 10-for-10 on field goals. In the Cougars’ win over North Alabama, Oldroyd made a 53-yard field goal as well as making all nine of his extra point attempts.
