Texas is going to get the benefit of a “quality loss” from the College Football Playoff selection committee when it releases its next set of Top 25 rankings on Tuesday. The Longhorns hosted No. 13 Iowa State in the first of two Top 25 duels on Black Friday, and while they lost 23-20 at home Tom Herman’s team will continue to get the benefit of the doubt. Look for them to remain one of the last two or three teams standing once the calendar flips to December.
Sam Ehlinger had another big game in defeat, throwing for 295 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-29 passing. The quarterback also led the team with 65 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. Texas outgained the Cyclones on offense and held Iowa State to four field goal attempts, but gave up a late Breece Hall touchdown to suffer their third loss of the year and effectively fall out of contention for a spot in the Big 12 championship game.
The nature of their defeat — not to mention that their three defeats have come by a combined 13 points — will keep the Longhorns in the rankings for at least one more week. Texas closes out the regular season with a road swing that takes them to Kansas State and Kansas on the first two Saturdays of December.
